"Bringing beauty into everyday life" - this was the goal pursued by architect Josef Hoffmann, co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte and later founder of the Österreichische Werkstätten, throughout his life.

Josef Hoffmann, cult figure of great consequence, with a penchant for cubism, was smilingly called "Quadratbürger Hoffmann" in his day. The architect worked for manufactories such as Augarten Porzellan, Backhausen and J. & L. Lobmeyr. Many of his patterns are still reproduced today. The Backhausen company, for example, has an extensive archive of his work and many fabrics are inspired by sketches and drawings by Josef Hoffmann. His set tables, the Kubus armchair or his seating machine are particularly popular. Some pieces of furniture are still mass-produced by the Wittmann company today. In addition, some of his designs are on permanent display in Vienna at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK).

Josef Hoffmann is responsible for quite a few twists and turns in art history and was rightly called the " father of modernism" at the time. His vision was "the indivisibility of life, art and architecture".

Through his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where Josef Hoffmann was taught by Otto Wagner, whose influence later left a strong mark on him, he met Joseph Maria Olbrich. Together with other artists, such as Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser, the "Vienna Secession" was founded in 1897 .

In 1903 Josef Hoffmann founded the Wiener Werkstätte with his colleague Koloman Moser and the banker Fritz Wärndorfer, which had to close after 29 years.

In 1912 Hoffmann was a co-founder of the Austrian Werkbund, which acted as an interface between crafts, architecture and art.

In 1948 , Josef Hoffmann founded the Österreichische Werk stätten, in a sense the resurrection of the Wiener Werkstätte. Continuing the statutes of the Wiener Werkstätte, they strove to combine functional clarity of form, high-quality materials and craftsmanship, and in this way to bring charm and grace into everyday life - with success!
